DRONE EDUCATION SERVICES

In 2016, Computational Thinkers took over the roles and responsibilities of what was known at the time as the “Hawaii Drone Academy”.   As the industry changed, so did we.  We still specialize in teaching individuals how to operate Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) and preparing them for their General Aviation & FAA Part 107 Test but now we go beyond basic operations.

Drones may be unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) navigated and controlled without a human pilot onboard, but they are more than just flying devices.   Our Computational Drone Academy  is showing our students how to apply computational concepts like data capture techniques for Big Data Analytics for  Geographic Information Systems, Agriculture industry needs for  monitoring land moisture content, Thermal imaging for the construction industry, and so much more.

Learn to be an Operator

The Hawaii Drone Academy specializes in teaching individuals how to operate Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS). Learn to fly safely, better understand the FAA rules and regulations, learn the no fly zones, and handle your equipment like an expert!

Topics Covered:

  • Aerodynamics
  • Systems Overview
  • Regulation / Federal Aviation Administration
  • Electromagnetic Spectrum
  • Navigation
  • Weather
  • Payload
  • Aeronautical Decision Making (ADM)

Aerial Photography

Discover a broader range of possibilities in your drone and pick up essential skills that will help you capture our beautiful paradise here in Hawaii through aerial photography. These workshops are designed for those who love to fly their drones but want to take their aerial photography skills to the next level.

Topics Covered:

  • Navigating the menu options of your drone’s camera
  • Practical adjustments in aperture, shutter speed and white balance
  • Reading histograms and evaluate images in-camera
  • Understanding the different types of aerial photos (oblique, high obliques, low obliques, near vertical, wide shot, close-up, panorama, true vertical, ortho-rectified vertical)
  • Importing photos from the camera
  • Editing photos for print, web, book, email, etc.

Aerial Videography

Discover a broader range of possibilities in your drone and pick up essential skills that will help you capture our beautiful paradise here in Hawaii through aerial photography. These workshops are designed for those who love to fly their drones but want to take their aerial photography skills to the next level

Topics Covered:

  • Importing videos from the camera
  • Making sense of the Final Cut Pro X Library
  • Categorizing, rating and making collections of favorites
  • Editing favorites for presentation on the web, email, videos and other cinematography uses
  • Picking the perfect track to accompany your production
  • Exporting your videos to fullest quality

Data Capture and A.I. Technology

In the last couple of years, the usage of UAV (aka, “drone”) technology has grown significantly. We use drones for taking impressive aerial photos, inspecting buildings, infrastructure, crops and even surveying and mapping but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Drone enthusiasts are creative people and constantly coming up with new ways to use them. Students in the class will learn how drone technology is becoming one of the next big collectors of data and with the help of A.I. to process this data, we humans are able to take actions on these results.

Topics Covered:

  • Think of big data as raw unrefined material
  • Drones as the mining machinery
  • A.I. as the processing plant
  • And the actionable data is the resource that we humans can use or sell to add value to our society
